HOW PATIENT CHOICE AND MARKETISATION IS INCREASING PRO-RICH BIAS AND GENDER INEQUALITIES: SCOTLAND AND ENGLAND COMPARISON

This talk will briefly compare the history of patient choice and introduction of private providers for NHS funded care in Scotland and England since 2002. It will then examine the impact of these linked policies on waiting times and treatment rates for the richest and poorest 20% of the population using elective surgery as an illustration.
Allyson Pollock trained in medicine and is a public health physician and academic scholar. She is professor of public health and was director of the Institute for Health & Society and of the Newcastle University Centre of Excellence in Regulatory Science.
She has previously worked at University College London, the University of Edinburgh, and Queen Mary University of London, and was director of research and development a University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust from 1998 to 2005.
Allyson’s research interests are in health systems and particularly the impact of marketisation in the NHS on equity, access to medicines and appropriate medicines use, pharmaceutical regulation and regulatory science; the epidemiology of child and sports injury; public private partnerships in health care; and long term care. She is well known for her longstanding active commitment to promoting universal public health care in the UK, and her expertise on marketisation and other aspects of health service reform.
