Sophie Jean Meiklejohn, from Shetland served with the Scottish Women's Hospital at Royaumont, France in 1915. She worked for the French Red Cross until 1917, followed by a position at the Edinburgh War Hospital, Bangour until 1918, and with the American Red Cross until 1919.
She was appointed Assistant Medical Officer to the Carnegie Dunfermline Trust. Around 1930, she became MO to the Dunfermline College of Hygiene and Physican Education. She was a member of the Pathology Society and published three articles in the Journals of Anatomy and Physiology.
At an age when most were anticipating retirement, she went to Africa, becoming a pioneer doctor in Northern Rhodesia (now Zambia). She founded the Chilubi Hospital in 1937 and St Margaret's Leper colony in 1942. She died at Chilubi of blackwater fever.
