“THE VIEW FROM THE DWARF, LOOKING BACK” 

Professor James Hutchison, Professor Emeritus, Regius Chair of Surgery and Sir Harry Platt Chair of Orthopaedic Surgery, University of Aberdeen, Chairman of Governors, Robert Gordon’s College, Aberdeen

After school and university education in Dundee, Jimmy came to Aberdeen in 1980. He held the Regius Chair of Surgery and the Sir Harry Platt Chair of Orthopaedics at the University of Aberdeen until retiring in 2016, although he continued to work part-time as an orthopaedic surgeon with NHS Grampian and for the Scottish Government, chairing the Scottish Orthopaedic Services Development Group.

He was Vice-President of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh 2012-15, and has held various posts in surgery and orthopaedics, having previously chaired the Scottish Hip Fracture Audit, the Scottish Audit of Surgical Mortality and the Scottish Committee for Orthopaedics and Trauma, and been Specialty Adviser to the Chief Medical Officer.

He has been President of the Harveian Society, the Moynihan Chirurgical Club and the Aberdeen Medico-Chirurgical Society, and Attending Surgeon for the Scotland Rugby Team. He is the Chairman of the Board of Governors at Robert Gordon’s College, and was Chairman of the Royal Northern & University Club, Aberdeen 2017-18.

He is married to Kate, with three grown up children, and has stayed at Echt since 1981.
