“Dr RD Lawrence: The Life And Work of Aberdeen’s Other Insulin Hero”
Dr Ken McHardy, Retired Consultant in Diabetes and General Medicine, Aberdeen
Ken McHardy is an Aberdonian who attended Aberdeen Grammar School and the University of Aberdeen Medical School, graduating in 1978. He trained as a general physician specialising in diabetes, including a spell in metabolic research at the Rowett Institute which led to an MD in 1990.
He worked in the local adult diabetes service for over 30 years and was lead consultant between 2007 and 2014, developing major interests in professional and patient education. He was President of Aberdeen Medico Chirurgical Society in 2012-13 and Honorary Secretary 2015-18.
In recent years, he has been involved in researching, writing and presenting on the discovery of clinically useful insulin in 1922; this has included numerous local and national presentations, and two visits to Canada as guest of the Toronto Medical Historical Club. He has also served as historian to the highly successful JJR Macleod Memorial Statue Society.
While the rehabilitation of Macleod’s unfairly tainted legacy has been the primary focus of many recent presentations, Ken now wishes to honour also the outstanding pioneering efforts of fellow Grammarian and UoA medical graduate, Robin Lawrence as an international champion of those living with diabetes.
