Stuart was born in Edinburgh in 1947 and moved to Aberdeen in 1952. He was educated at Aberdeen Grammar School, where he served as Head Prefect, before graduating with honours from the University of Aberdeen Medical School in 1972. Following postgraduate training in Aberdeen, he undertook senior registrar posts in infectious diseases at East Birmingham Hospital and St Thomas’ Hospital, London. In 1981, he was appointed Consultant Physician in General Medicine, Infectious Diseases and Tropical Medicine at Southmead Hospital, Bristol. With the emergence of HIV/AIDS in the early 1980s, Stuart became a regional specialist for the South West of England and established the region’s specialist centre for HIV management. He also developed expertise in the management of highly hazardous infectious diseases, including Lassa fever and Ebola, and had responsibility for specialist negative-pressure isolation facilities.
Stuart retired from NHS consultant practice in 2012 and returned to Aberdeenshire in 2017, dividing his time between Aberdeen and Braemar. He has subsequently worked as a consulting medical officer to Canada Life and HSBC, advising on medical and health-risk assessment. His interests include hill walking, road cycling, reading and medical history. He was President of Deeside Probus in 2023–24 and became Vice-Chair of RNUC in 2024.
