Isabella Copland Smith

One of Aberdeen's first five female medical graduates

Isabella Copland Smith was born in Aberdeen in 1878 and was one of the three women who graduated in 1903. Shortly after graduating, Smith married another Aberdeen medical graduate, John Joseph Johnson. They had two children together and moved to the south of England.

During WW1, Smith volunteered with a military support organisation and later a London transport company before starting her career in paediatrics. She died from pneumonia aged 70 following an incident where her dressing gown caught fire in her nursing home.
