Neva Haites was born in Brisbane, Australia. After graduating BSc (1968) and PhD (1972) in Biochemistry from the University of Queensland, she moved to Aberdeen where she studied Medicine, graduating in 1980. She trained in medical genetics, gaining fellowships in both medicine and pathology and has a successful career as a Clinical Academic in Medical Genetics with interests in cancer genetics, retinitis pigmentosa and hereditary neuropathies. Within the University of Aberdeen, she held the positions of Professor of Medical Genetics, Head of College of Life Sciences and became the first female Vice Principal. She continues to contribute to the University as Emeritus Professor of Medical Genetics.
