Joint Event with University of Aberdeen Medical Society
All are welcome to hear short presentations by students who received the society's elective bursaries. On the night, the audience will decide the winner of the Adam Quaich.

The May Electives Evening would normally be held prior to graduation, with the desired aim of having all bursary holders in Aberdeen and competing for the Adam Quaich. Due to the current Covid-19 pandemic, this year’s electives evening was very unusual. All participants had graduated early to enable them to commence working and not all had remained within Aberdeen. Dr Courtney Furzer was working at the time of the electives evening and pre-recorded her talk. The meeting was held virtually via a video-conferencing platform.
The President, Dr Bill Reith, welcomed the audience and noted apologies. The meeting was then chaired by Dr Donald Thomas (UoA electives convener until December 2019) and Mr Graeme Miller (President of MedSoc). The standard of material being presented was high and the broad range of topics made for a very interesting and educational evening.

Each of the competitors gave their presentation and dealt successfully with a range of questions from the audience. At the end of the last presentation, instructions were given for voting via Survey Monkey. Although the winner could not be announced on the evening, the winner was notified later that evening, after closure of the on-line voting.
The voting returns for the Adam Quaich competition showed that while each of the candidates was someone’s choice of winner, Dr Heather Sturgeon received most votes.
After the presentations, the President congratulated all competitors on their excellent work and illustrated talks. He advised that the winner would receive an engraved, smaller replica of the Quaich to keep, in due course and that all participants would receive a book token to thank them for their efforts in the very unusual circumstances. Dr Reith also thanked Dr Thomas for his work in enabling the evening to go ahead and thanked both Dr Thomas and Mr Miller for chairing the proceedings.
The company was reminded of the Society’s Annual General Meeting and Presidential Address on 4th June, via the video-conferencing platform Zoom, and the meeting was adjourned.
